83. 1st Grade SRR: We Tell Tail Tales

I am Duke. I’m black from nose to tail. My tail is black, too. My pals have tan tails, gray tails, and white tails.

I like to run fast with my pals. We can all run fast. We can run for miles before we need to rest.

I am May. When I run, I don’t want to trip! I just jump over big rocks and logs. I duck under trees as I dash through them. My tail trails in back and flaps like a flag. It helps brush twigs off my back. If I feel hot, I can stop to drink.

I am Buck. I run fast, too, but I let kids catch me. Kids like to ride on my back and brush my thick mane.

Some kids braid my tail to make it look nice. I like to carry kids, but I don’t like those braids much!

I am Midge. Let me tell you how I use my tail to say things. My tail sticks up to say, “Yay! I’m glad.” I clamp my tail flat to say, “I don’t like this.”

When I’m mad, I’ll flick my tail. That’s to say, “I’m not glad. Stay away!”

I am Blaze. I can get rid of bugs with my tail. Bugs buzz and try to bite me.

I feel them land on me, and I never like that! You’ll see me swish my tail to drive them off. Swish! Go away, bugs!

I am Gail. What if bugs land on my nose? My tail isn’t much help then. It can’t reach my nose. That’s when I go to my best pal. He’ll use his tail to sweep bugs off my nose, and I’ll sweep bugs off his nose, too. We are a team!
