Sunshine plays a bigger role in our lives than you may think. All the food we eat and the fossil fuels we burn are products of photosynthesis.

3

It is the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar.

What is Photosynthesis?

1 Definition

4

1.Sunlight is converted into chemical energy.

2.Water (H2O) is split into oxygen (O2).

3.Carbon dioxide (CO2) is fixed into sugars (C6H12O6).

Photosynthesis has 3 major events:

2 How it works?

During photosynthesis, plants take in carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) from the air and soil. Within the plant cell, the water is oxidized, meaning it loses electrons, while the carbon dioxide is reduced, meaning it gains electrons. This transforms the water into oxygen and the carbon dioxide into glucose.

3 What are the organelles involved in photosynthesis?

The chloroplast is a specialized intracellular organelle where photosynthesis takes place. During the day, photosynthesis goes out by chloroplasts. The photosynthetic cells use NADPH and ATP, the direct results of photosynthesis, to make a variety of chemical substances.

These organisms are known as photoautotrophs or producers meaning they make their food and energy from the sun

4 What is the end product?

The products of photosynthesis are glucose and oxygen.

10

Why do plants make glucose?

. The plant next uses this glucose as a source of energy for different metabolic activities. Cellular respiration is the system by which glucose is broken down to produce energy for the metabolic processes of the plant. During respiration, glucose, and oxygen mix to create carbon dioxide, water, and ATP (adenosine triphosphate).
