You use 'an' when there is a vowel letter. The vowels are a,e,i,o,u.

Ex: An apple

We use 'an' before the word apple because the first letter of the word is a vowel.

You use 'a' when there is a consonant letter.

Ex: A bag

We use 'a' before bag because the first letter of the word bag is starting with a consonant.
