Many people choose to walk to get to places. You may be a person who does some walking. It is important to know the rules to keep yourself safe.

A person who is walking is called a pedestrian.

When you are crossing a road, you need to look for a crosswalk. There are many different types of crosswalks. The crosswalk with stripes is called a Zebra crosswalk. Do you know why?

Another type of crosswalk is much like the zebra crossing. It is clearly marked so that people can see what it is, where it starts and where it ends.

There are also signs that can indicate to someone that it is a safe place to cross.

Some crosswalks have no signs to indicate that it is a crosswalk. This could be very dangerous. Do you know why?

Another type of crosswalk is one that has signals to indicate when you should cross. These crosswalks are mostly in big cities where there is a lot of traffic.

Some crosswalks will give a signal or light to indicate when a pedestrian should cross. When the signal is red you should STOP! When the signal is green, that means GO!

Sometimes there is a crossing patrol person or "lollipop" who can indicate when it is safe to cross. They hold a sign that has Stop on one side and Go on the other side.

When riding your bike you should always be sure to wear your helmet. Do you know why this is important?

Sometimes you may find that there is no footpath where you want to go. There is a safety rule for this as well. You must walk where you can see the cars coming toward you!
