Coordinating Conjunctions

Coordinating Conjunction: connects two equal words, pharses, and clauses

There are seven coordinating conjunctions: for, and, nor, but, or yet, and so. A useful strategy to remember them is to memorize the acronym FANBOYS.

Coordinating conjunctions have two purposes:

  • Join independent clauses: when using a corrdinating conjunction to join two independent clauses, you must insert a comma before the conjunction.

Example: I want to buy the new jacket, but it is too expensive.

  • Join words and pharases: coordinating conjunctions can connect two words. When just two words are connected using a coordinating conjunction, no comma is needed. When three or more words are listed, a comma should be placed before the coordinated conjunction.

Example: My favorite foods are burritos and hamburgers.

Example Alison wants to buy a dress, shoes, or movie tickets for her birthday.
