The collaborative plan
Tutee: “Hey tutor…so,
today in class we were
working on finding
conditional probability
from a table. To be
honest, I was completely
lost in class. I took notes
and we have a homework
assignment due
tomorrow. Can you help
me out?
Tutor: Okay, so I see that you
hope to be able to complete
your homework assignment on
conditional probability with
fluency? If so, let’s spend
about 10-15 minutes reviewing
conditional probability. Once
we’re good there, we’ll do
some practice that I have
prepared. From there, we can
begin working on your
homework. Sounds like a
plan?

Tutee: “Hey tutor…so, today
in class we were working on
explaining the main idea of
a text using supporting
details. I mean, I know
what a main idea is but I
struggle with the using
supporting details part. I
don’t have any homework
tonight but I have a test on
this in two days. Can you
help me out?

Tutor: “I see. So your goal is to be
able to identify supporting details
from the text that support the
main idea of a text. One thing
that helps me is writing out the
main idea as a margin note then
underlining anything that
supports. I can demonstrate this
method then we’ll spend about 20
minutes practicing this method
together on a set of tasks I have
prepared then the rest of the
session I will let you practice on
your own with some other texts I
have access to.
