Paleoclimatology is the study of climate change over the entire history of Earth. In this field, scientists ATTEMPT TO understand current climate patterns and predict future climate change by looking at evidence from the past that REVEALS how climate changed, what caused the changes, and how the changes affected the planet.
15
Like detectives, paleoclimatologists use clues found in nature to reconstruct what climate was like long ago. Natural records of climate, which are called climate proxies, can be found in many places such as in rocks, tree rings, ice sheets, and on the ocean floor. These sources of historical information about the climate are preserved physical evidence of the past that substitutes for direct measurements of weather and climate. Each climate proxy contains different information. For example, ice cores, long tubes of ice that scientists drill out of glaciers, contain gas bubbles, dust, and pollen that have built up in layers over tens of thousands of years. The physical evidence that is contained in the layers can be used to determine past climate information like air temperatures, the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, sea level, and the amount of energy coming from the sun. Ocean sediment, which is a gathering of solid materials that have settled at the bottom of the sea floor, contains many of the same elements as ice cores, but it also includes ancient fossils and chemicals that help scientists discover climate information from millions of years ago. These are the oldest clues to the historical climate.
