FREQUENCY ADVERBS

Frequency adverbs, also known as adverbs of frequency, are a type of adverb used to indicate how often an action or event occurs. These adverbs provide information about the frequency of an action or the regularity of its occurrence. They are commonly used to modify verbs in sentences and are placed before the main verb.

2

Some common examples of frequency adverbs include:

  1. Always: The action happens all the time. Example: She always arrives on time for work.

  2. Usually: The action happens most of the time, but not always. Example: I usually go to the gym in the morning.

  3. Often: The action occurs frequently, more than just "usually." Example: They often visit their grandparents on weekends.

3

  1. Sometimes: The action happens occasionally, but not very frequently. Example: We sometimes have pizza for dinner.

  2. Rarely/Seldom: The action happens very infrequently, almost never. Example: He rarely goes to the cinema.

  3. Hardly ever: The action happens so rarely that it's almost never. Example: They hardly ever eat fast food.

  4. Never: The action does not occur at all. Example: I never drink coffee in the evening.

6

  • Always: This frequency adverb is the simplest. It is just a single word and is used to indicate that an action happens all the time.

Structure: [Subject] + always + [main verb] Example: She always arrives on time for work.

  • Usually: This frequency adverb is also a single word and is used to indicate that an action happens most of the time, but not always.

Structure: [Subject] + usually + [main verb] Example: I usually go to the gym in the morning.

7

  • Often: This frequency adverb is again a single word and indicates that an action happens frequently, more than just "usually."

Structure: [Subject] + often + [main verb] Example: They often visit their grandparents on weekends.

  • Sometimes: This frequency adverb is also a single word and indicates that an action happens occasionally, but not very frequently.

Structure: [Subject] + sometimes + [main verb] Example: We sometimes have pizza for dinner.

8

  • Rarely/Seldom: These two frequency adverbs are interchangeable and both indicate that an action happens very infrequently, almost never.

Structure: [Subject] + rarely/seldom + [main verb] Examples:

    • He rarely goes to the cinema.

    • She seldom eats spicy food.

  • Hardly ever: This frequency adverb indicates that an action happens so rarely that it's almost never.

Structure: [Subject] + hardly ever + [main verb] Example: They hardly ever eat fast food.

9

  • Never: This frequency adverb is also simple, indicating that an action does not occur at all.

    1. Structure: [Subject] + never + [main verb] Example: I never drink coffee in the evening.

In each case, the frequency adverb is placed before the main verb in the sentence to modify the verb and give information about how often the action occurs. Keep in mind that there are many other adverbs of frequency, but these are some of the most commonly used ones.
