Maps, Plans and Scales

*Scale that uses line segments of a certain length to show the scale on the map

*maps designed to show limited terrain in the shape of a strip used to determine distances

​5) Strip map / Strookroete kaart

1) the distance between two buildings in a town on a map measure 4.8 cm on a 1: 20 000 map. what is the distance on the ground in meters

Scale Example calculations

1) 1: 20 00 means that one unit on the map = 20 000 units on the ground

= 4.8 cm x 20 000 = 96 000 cm

= ÷ by 100 to get to m

= 96000 ÷100 = 960 m

Scale Example calculations

2a) 1: 50 000 beteken dat 1 eenheid op die kaart verteenwoordig 50 000 eenhede in die werklikheid.

*skakel 50 000 cm om na km.

*1 cm op die grond verteenwoordig

= 50 000÷ 100 000 = 0.5 km

2b) 40 km kan voorgetsel word as 40 ÷ 0.5

=80 cm op die kaart

= 3cm on map x 200 km

actual distance = 600 km

c) afstand is +- 8,4 cm as jy met `n leniaal meet

d) scale is 1: 200 km

= 8,4 cm on map x 200 km

= 1680 km for the actual distance
