Importance of Workplace Safety
Government Safety Requirements
Why do we do safety training? Safety training isn't just a good idea, its the law! The Occupational Safety and Health Administration Act (1970) was put into place to make sure employers are training employees for the hazards in the workplace. Maintaining a safe work environment is not only good for you but it is the law. Understanding the hazards isn't just good practice, its the law! The last thing you want to do is to get hurt and be out of work or have someone sue your shop for unsafe work environment.

A cut finger from a sharp metal part or a razor blade, a jammed finger from a hammer blow, or a poked hand when inspecting a tire showing cord are all instances that can cause the body to bleed.

These account for the majority of shop environment injuries.
Slips, Trips, and Falls.

Working in an automotive shop, slips are inevitable. Automotive fluids are slick. Transmission fluid from a flush, coolant from a radiator replacement, engine oil from an oil pan replacement, brake fluid from a caliper replacement, all of these can cause you to slip. Clean up messes when you make them.
Slips
Tripping hazards are all over an automotive shop. From parts laying on the ground to cords from equipment, tripping is a common injury. Sometimes you cannot avoid the cords on the ground or the parts. Be aware of your surroundings.
Trips
There will be times where you have to stand on a step stool, or a ladder, or a lift arm, or in a truck bed, maybe on a bumper. Falling is always a risk. Injuring yourself from falls is a risk. Be careful so you don't put yourself out of work.
