1

EQ (EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE)

  • We believe that EQ should be a cross-curricular content. It’s something to apply in every class, with every student, and in a natural way.

  • There must be interpersonal connections made in the classroom for meaningful learning to take place.

  • As teachers, we feel responsible for the student’s motivation.

  • It is particularly important for our teachers to use a type of language that is positive, honest, and empowering at the same time.

  • As teachers, we need to lead by example when it comes to EQ (emotional intelligence)

2

Classroom Management

  • At The Family Language, it’s important to have consequences for students if they don't respect the class rules but no punishments of any sort are allowed in our schools.

  • At The Family Language, we believe the best way to avoid classroom issues is to keep the students motivated and engaged.

  • At The Family Language, we never send a student out of the classroom as a punishment. If they show poor behavior, we kindly ask them to go out and fill up a reflection sheet for a couple of minutes.

  • At The Family Language, we don’t expect the students to sit down quietly for the whole session. That's why we provide them with different seating options to suit their emotional and physical state at every moment in class.

3

GAMIFICATION

  • Gamification is one of the pillars of our methodology. We apply game-based learning and Gamification techniques in every single class at TFL.

  • Gamification is not a game played during a specific moment of the class, it’s an element that is present all throughout the lesson and is aimed to keep the students engaged, attentive, and better behaved, from minute one till the end of the lesson.

  • The teachers at The Family Language are provided with a set of games to be used for Game-Based Learning activities and with a planned Gamification to play as a "background of the lesson" every week.

  • Our teachers are not afraid to be silly and to bring their own personality into it. It’s important for us that our teachers put their own spin on it.

  • We want our teachers to deliver their lessons in a way that is fun for them. Teachers and students will feed off each other.

4

ASSESSMENT

  • At TFL, we never assess to judge, or label students. The objective is always to create a learning opportunity for the students.

  • Keeping the class under control when there are discipline problems is NEVER a good reason to assess students. At The Family Language, we never threaten students, especially by giving or removing marks.

  • At TFL, we set up objectives for success, not for failure. Our teachers will never use exams to “prove a point” like proving to students that their bad behavior affects their grades (it is far from being true).
