2
What is
rounding?
Rounding means to change a
number to the nearest ten,
hundred, or thousand. Look at
the digit to the right of the place
value being rounded.
3
Why is
rounding
important?
Rounding helps simplify numbers
and make estimations. It's like
reading numbers on a scale -
rounding to the nearest pound
gives a quick idea of weight.
4
Rules for rounding
If the digit is 5 or greater, round up.
Identify the digit to the right of the place you want to
round.
If the digit is less than 5, round down.
5
Rounding to the
nearest ten
Rounding to the nearest ten involves looking at the
ones digit of the number you are rounding. If it is 5 or
more, round up. If it is less than 5, round down.
6
Rounding to
the nearest
hundred
Rounding to the nearest hundred
means estimating the value of a
number to the closest hundred.
Look at the tens digit to round up
or down.
7
Rounding to the
nearest thousand
Rounding is a useful skill to simplify large numbers
while preserving their general value. To round to the
nearest thousand, look at the hundreds place.
8
Practice exercises help students master
math concepts. Encourage your 4th
grader to solve problems from a math
problems book for better grades.
