Complete Sentences

  • A complete sentence, by definition, includes a subject (the actor or “do-er” in a
sentence) and a verb (the action done by the “do-er”).

  • Sentence errors come in two forms: fragments and run-ons

A fragment is an incomplete sentence. It is missing either a subject or a verb, or it is an
incomplete thought or information.

Examples:

■ Slammed the door and left.

■ The answer to our question.

■ Since she never saw the movie.

■ Which makes me think that he is right.

Complete Sentences (continued)

  • A complete sentence, by definition, includes a subject (the actor or “do-er” in a
sentence) and a verb (the action done by the “do-er”).

  • Sentence errors come in two forms: fragments and run-ons

A run-on occurs when two or more sentences (also known as “independent clauses”) are incorrectly joined together. They may not include punctuation between the two clauses, or they may include the wrong punctuation between the two clauses.

Examples:

Often, choosing a topic for a paper is the hardest part it’s a lot easier after that.

Sometimes, books do not have the most complete information, it’s a good idea then to look for articles in specialized journals.
