In this lesson, you will use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units.

​Introduction
Bruce wants to try golfing. He's going to the course with his father. On their way, Bruce asks his father how big the driving range is, how far his father's golf shots go with different clubs, and so on. Bruce notices that his father states distances in yards. When Bruce inquires further, his father converts the distances from yards to feet for him. When they reach the driving range, Bruce notices that all the distance signs are in yards. Bruce plays baseball and is used to measuring distances in feet. To tell his friends how far he can hit a golf ball, and to compare the distance of his golf shots to his baseball hits, he needs to convert from yards to feet. What Bruce needs to know is the ratio between two units, feet and yards. In this lesson, we'll look at the ratios of different units of measurement of the same quantity and use those ratios to change measurements from one unit to another.

​Ratios in Measurements
Imagine that your mother needs to buy one pound of meat. The grocery store where she regularly buys meat is closed, so she goes to a different store. The quantity of meat that she gets is the same as the quantity she would have purchased at her regular store. The quantity is the same because one pound is the same weight no matter where it is used. It is a unit of measurement. In general, a unit of measurement is defined as a fixed amount of a physical quantity. In other words, a unit is used as a standard for measuring a physical quantity. In the example above, the physical quantity involved is weight, and the unit of measurement is a pound. If your mother buys five pounds of meat, she buys five times the standard weight that is called a pound. Over time, different systems of measurement have developed in different parts of the world. Currently, the two main systems of measurement are the metric system and the customary system. The units of measurements in these two systems are different.

​In the metric system of measurement, each physical quantity can be measured in several units of different sizes. Millimeters (mm) and centimeters (cm) are smaller units of length than meters (m) and kilometers (km). Note the relationships between these units:

• 1 km = 1,000 m (1 : 1,000)

• 1 m = 100 cm (1 : 100)

• 1 cm = 10 mm (1 : 10)

Similar equations can be written for units of weight and volume in the metric system:

• 1 kilogram (kg) = 1,000 grams (g) (1 : 1,000)

• 1 gram (g) = 1,000 milligrams (mg) (1 : 1,000)

• 1 liter (L) = 1,000 milliliters (mL) (1 : 1,000)

There are two rules to use to convert measurements from one unit to another. Let's work through a few examples to find out what those rules are.

​Based on these four examples, we can write these two rules: To convert a quantity from a larger unit to a smaller unit (such as kilometer to meter), multiply the quantity by the ratio of the larger unit to the smaller unit. To convert a quantity from a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide the quantity by the ratio of the larger unit to the smaller unit. Knowing these two rules makes it simpler to convert between units.

In this lesson, you worked with units of measurement of physical quantities such as weight, distance, and volume. A unit of measurement of a physical quantity is a fixed amount used as a standard for measuring the physical quantity. There are two main systems of measurement, the metric system and the customary system, each with a different set of units.

Within the same system of measurement, there are different units for each physical quantity. When two units measure the same quantity, they are related to each other by a ratio. For example, the ratio of yards to feet is 1 : 3. You can use these ratios to convert quantities from one unit to another using these two rules:

• To convert a quantity from a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply the quantity by the ratio of the larger unit to the smaller unit.

• To convert a quantity from a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide the quantity by the ratio of the larger unit to the smaller unit.
