In this lesson, you will describe the absolute value of a rational number as its distance from zero on the number line.

​Introduction 

Terrence is watching his favorite football team, the Tigers, play a game. Each play in the game is given either a positive or a negative sign. Terrence wants to know how to interpret the meaning of a number without a sign (that is, the number's absolute value) and how absolute values of numbers are used in the real world.

​Distance of Numbers from Zero

You know that any rational number can be expressed as a point on the number line. The number 0, which is neither positive nor negative, is at the center of the number line, separating positive numbers from negative numbers. Numbers to the right of 0 on the number line are positive, and numbers to the left of 0 on the number line are negative. The absolute value of a number is the distance of the number from 0.

Here's an example that illustrates the meaning and use of absolute values. When Rob and Ellen leave their home to go to work, they drive in opposite directions. After half an hour, Rob is 14 miles from home and Ellen is also 14 miles from home. To mark these distances on a number line, we can represent their home with the number 0. Then, if Rob is at the point -14 on the number line, Ellen is at +14. As you know, distances cannot be negative. The positive and negative signs of Rob's and Ellen's positions just show that they've traveled in opposite directions. The absolute value of the distance each one traveled is 14. Rob and Ellen are both 14 miles from home.

​As you've seen, the absolute value of a number is its distance from zero on the number line. For example, +6 is six units from 0 on the number line. Because 6 is the distance of +6 from 0, the absolute value of +6 is 6. The absolute value of a number x is written as |x|. For example, 
|-3| = 3 and |+2| = 2. 

Now let's find the absolute value of -6. As you can see in the picture, -6 is six units to the left of 0. Therefore, the absolute value of -6 is 6. 

You can express the absolute value of a number on calculators and computers as abs(x). For example, |-3| = abs(-3) = 3. Absolute value is also known as magnitude.

Now that you know what an absolute value is, let's look at some real-world situations that are based on absolute values. 

Gain and loss are opposite values. A gain is represented by a positive number because when you gain an amount, you end up with more than what you had in the beginning. A loss is represented by a negative number because when you lose an amount, you end up with less than you had before. Because you cannot have a negative amount of money, absolute value is used to express the magnitude of gain and loss. If you see -$10 in your bank account, that means you have a shortfall, or debt, of $10. 

Let's look at an example. Joanna runs a flower shop outside the local nursing home. Every day, she makes a profit of $25. This profit can be expressed on a number line as +$25 because it is 25 more than the amount she had before the sale. 

On a particular day, Joanna did not sell as many flowers as expected and had a loss of $25. On a number line, this loss would be expressed as a negative number, -25.

​Absolute Values and Altitudes

Altitude is the height of a place in relation to sea level. On a number line, an altitude above sea level is represented by a positive sign and an altitude below sea level is represented by a negative sign. Sea level lies at 0 on the number line. 

Let's look at an example of positive and negative altitudes. Ryan is rock climbing with friends and has reached the top of a rock wall. His altimeter, a device that measures altitude, displays a reading of +600 feet. This reading means that the rock is 600 feet above sea level. The absolute value of this reading, |+600 feet|, is 600 feet and tells us that the rock is a distance of 600 feet from sea level.

Later, Ryan goes deep-sea diving. His altimeter displays a reading of -600 feet. This reading means that he is 600 feet below sea level. The absolute value of this reading, |-600 feet|, is again 600 feet and tells us that Ryan is a distance of 600 feet from sea level.

Terrence was watching his favorite football team, the Tigers. While watching the Tigers’ plays, he noted that various plays went for various distances, some positive and some negative. Gain and loss are relative to the team that has the ball. Any play that moves the team that possesses the ball closer to scoring is considered a gain in yards. Any play that pushes the team with the ball farther away from scoring is a loss in yards. Understanding absolute values will help Terrence know what each of the positive and negative numbers means.

​Absolute Values and Electric Charges

Electric charges are classified as positive and negative. If an object has more positive charges than negative, it is positively charged. If an object has more negative than positive charges, it is negatively charged. Equal numbers of positive and negative charges make an object neutral.

The absolute value of the charge of an ion tells us how far the ion is from being neutral. For an object to be neutral, it needs to have equal numbers of positive and negative charges. For example, if the charge of an ion is +4, it is 4 units away from 0, or 4 units away from being neutral.

​Summary

The absolute value of a number is the distance of that number from 0 on the number line. When we talk about an absolute value, the number's sign, positive or negative, tells us where the number lies on the number line in relation to 0. A positive value means the number lies to the right of 0. A negative value means the number lies to the left of 0.

The absolute value of a number x is written as |x| or as abs(x), if you are using a calculator or a computer. The absolute value of a number is its value without the sign. For example, |+3| = 3 and |-3| = 3. 

Absolute values are used in a variety of real-life situations. Gain and loss are opposite values. Gain is positive and loss is negative. Absolute values of gain and loss tell us how much money we have earned or lost. Absolute values of altitudes tell us the distances of places above or below sea level, which is considered zero on the number line. The absolute value of an ion shows how far the ion is from being neutral.
