Chapter 9 Cardiovascular

2

Introduction and Overview of the

Cardiovascular System

The cardiovascular (CV) system is the body’s transport system. It

provides

  • Nourishment.

  • Cleanup services.

  • Communication.

Two parts:

Heart = cardi/o or coron/o

Blood vessels (vascular) = angi/o, vas/o, vascul/o

3

9.1 Word Parts of the Cardiovascular System 1

The heart functions to move blood throughout the body’s blood vessels.

Four chambers

  • 2 atriums = atri/o (2 upper chambers)

  • 2 ventricles = ventriculo/o (2 lower chambers)

Separated into the left and right sides by the septum =
sept/o (partition, dividing wall of muscle)

  • The left side receives blood from the lungs and delivers oxygen-rich blood to the body.

  • The right side receives blood from the body and delivers oxygen-poor blood to the lungs.

4

9.1 Word Parts of the Cardiovascular System 2

A valve = valvul/o is placed between each atrium and ventricle.

  • Right atrioventricular valve (tricuspid valve).

Left atrioventricular valve (mitral or bicuspid valve).

A valve is placed between each ventricle and large artery
.

  • Pulmonary valve. = pulmon/o (lung)

  • Aortic valve. = aort/o (aorta)
