French and Indian war

War fought in the colonies between the English and the
French for possession of the Ohio River Valley (1754-1763)

Albany plan of union

Plan proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1754 that aimed to
unite the 13th colonies for trade, military and other
purposes

Proclamation of 1763

Law forbidding English colonists to settle west of the
Appalachian Mountains

Sugar act of 1764

An act that raised tax revenue in the colonies for the
crown. It also increased the duty o foreign sugar imported
from the West Indies

Stamp act of 1765

Parliament placed a tax on almost all printed materials in
the colonies

Townshend ACts (1767)

Tax on items produced in Britain and sold in the colonies,
including paper, glass, lead, paint, and tea

Committees of Correspondence 1772

A colonial network of passing information throughout the
colonies

Coercive acts

The series of harsh laws that intended to make Massachusetts
pay for its resistance; closed down the Boston Harbor until
the Massachusetts colonists paid for the ruined tea; forced
Bostonians to shelter soldiers in their own homes

Lexington and concord

First battles of the Revolutionary War

Olive branch petition

A document sent by the Second Continental Congress to King
George III, proposing a reconciliation between the colonies
and Britain

Common sense

A pamphlet written by Thomas Paine that criticized the
monarchies and convinced many American colonists of the need
to break away from Britain

Declaration of independence

1776 statement issued by the Second Continental Congress
explaining why the colonies wanted independence from Britain

Boston massacre (1770)

An incident in which British soldiers fired into a crowd of
colonists; five colonists were killed

Boston tea party 1773

Colonial response to the Tea Act; colonists dressed at
Mohawk and bordered British ships to dump tea into Boston
Harbor

Second Continental Congress 1775

A convention of delegates from the 13 colonies, adopted the
Declaration of Independence
