Focus Terms (S7L4A-C)
Biotic- the living part in an ecosystem
Abiotic- the non-living parts in an ecosystem
Herbivore- a consumer that eats plants
Carnivore- a consumer that eats animals
Omnivore- a consumer that eats a variety of organisms, both plants and animalsDecomposer - An organism that breaks down organic matter.
Food Chain- represents how the energy in food molecules flow from one organism to the next
Food Web- a complex diagram representing the many energy pathways in a real ecosystem
Energy Pyramid- a diagram shaped like a triangle that show the loss of energy at each level of the food chain
Commensalism: An interaction between organisms in which one organism benefits, and the other neither benefits nor harms.

Focus Terms (S7L4A-C)
Competition: More than one individual or population in an ecosystem relying upon the same limited resources.
Host: An organism within or upon which another organism (parasite, commensal, or mutualist) resides.
Mutualism: An interaction between organisms or species that is helpful to both.
Parasitism: The symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits while the other is harmed.
Predator: An organism that captures and consumes another organism for nourishment.
Prey: An organism that is captured and consumed by another organism for nourishment.
Symbiosis: Symbiosis is any type of a close and long-term biological interaction between two different biological organisms, be it mutualistic, commensalistic, or parasitic.
4
Focus Terms (S7L4A-C)
Human activity: Things that people do or cause to happen
Community: All of the populations of different species in a particular area.
Disease: A disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, especially one that produces specific signs or symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury.

Multiple Choice
Which model correctly shows energy flow in a food chain?
6
Multiple Choice
Spider crabs live on the shallow ocean floor. Algae lives on the crabs. The algae helps the crabs blend in and the algae gets a good place to live. What type of symbiosis is this relationship?
Mutualism
Commensalism
Parasitism

Multiple Choice
What will happen to the Blue Regal fish if a disease wipes out the small invertebrates.
The Blue Regal would die out
The Blue Regal would continue to live, but would have less of a food source
The Blue Regal would become the top predator.

Multiple Choice
What will most likely happen to the foxes and the wolves if the rabbits were removed?
The foxes will eat more wolves.
The foxes will eat fewer wolves.
There will be more foxes and wolves.
There will be less foxes and wolves.

Multiple Choice
In an ecosystem, members of the lizards are observed eating members of the insect population. In this same ecosystem, birds are also observed using insects as a food source. The relationship between lizards and birds would best be described as –

Multiple Choice
There are three main types of symbiotic relationships: mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism. Which image displays commensalism? Choose your answer.
The tick benefits while dog is harmed.
Only one animals, the remora benefits. The shark is not hurt or helped.
The mosquito sucks the blood from warm-blooded animals and possibly transmits disease.
The elephants supply a food source by allowing the birds to eat parasites and other bugs from their skin.
15
Multiple Choice
Ants and acacia trees have a mutualistic relationship because
They both benefit from living with each other
They are both adapted to a humid climate.
They are part of the same ecosystem.
The ants eat part of the acacia tree.
16
Multiple Choice
Which of the following would have a negative impact on an ecosystem
constructing highways
planting trees
recycling paper
17
Multiple Choice
What happens when humans cut down forests to build shopping malls?
Plants and animals thrive in the new environment and pollution decreases.
The shopping mall reduces the amount of pollution in the area.
New animals species form and plants produce more oxygen.
Habitat are altered, plants and animals destroyed, and pollution increases.
