SALES
• Sales play a key role in the building of loyalty and trust between
customers and business. …
• During sales interactions, encouraging the customer to recommend a
friend or give positive feedback can have an impact on the growth of the
business through increased brand awareness and sales.
Having a strong sales team is crucial to the success of a company
because the sales department is responsible for making sales, growing
your business and retaining existing customers. Ultimately, the most
important function of your sales department is maintaining relationships
with your customers. This personal touch is the key to happy, long-term
client relationships, not to mention increased profitability.** Sticky

FAILURE TO HAVE A STRUCTURE
•If your business has no structured no
matter how small or large -
•The operation of the Business will be
affected
•If one area of the business operational
areas is not performing or structured
properly this can affect other areas of
the business risking production
output and potentially a complaint
•Some companies streamline their
functions this can be due to
• Cuts
• Shortages
• Staff shortages
•This does not automatically lead to a
reduction in service or quality
•Companies are taking advantage of
technological advances.
•Investment in equipment and
programs has led to a reduction of
staff, not in the service offered to the
customer

KEYTERMS INORGANISATIONALSTRUCTURE
MAKE SURE YOU ARE MAKING AND TAKING NOTES
• There are several key terms that apply to organisational structures:
• span of control - the number of staff that a manager has responsibility
for
• chain of command - the route by which instructions and
communications flow from the top to the bottom of a business,
explaining who is answerable to whom
• delayering - a process where a business removes layers of its
management to make its structure flatter
• delegation - a process where tasks are given to members of staff,
where often managers give tasks to employees further down the chain
of command
• subordinates - members of staff below a manager in the chain of
command

1. HIERARCHICAL (OR
TALL)
2. FLAT.
29
FLAT STRUCTURE
• A flat structure is an organizational structure
with only a few layers of management.
• In a flat structure, managers have a wide span
of control with more subordinates, and there is
usually a short chain of command.
• Flat organizations are also oftentimes called or
referred to as self-managed organizations **
Great key points to pop in your Notes for this
week

Benefits of a Flat Structure
One of the main benefits of this structure is that it
makes room for decision-making to happen
Managers are responsible for smaller teams and
decisions happen faster some of the biggest
companies we know operate a flat structure
30
HIERARCHICAL (OR TALL)
• A hierarchical structure is often
also referred to as a ‘tall’
organizational structure.
• A hierarchical structure has many
layers of management, and
businesses with this structure
often use a ‘top-down’ approach
with a long chain of command.
• In a hierarchical structure,
managers will have a narrow span
of control and a relatively small
number of subordinates (staff).

33
OTHER COMPANIES WITH TALL STRUCTURES
Oxfam also have a tall organizational structure.
They also operate with a matrix structure as a
multinational company. They also have a
Hierarchical structure which is a traditional
business structure. This layout groups people in
levels of importance and ranks them in levels of
relevance.
34
• MATRIX WHAT IS A
MATRIX STRUCTURE?
• A matrix organizational structure is a workplace format
in which employees report to two or more managers
rather than one manager overseeing every aspect of a
project.
• For example, an employee may have a primary
manager they report to as well as one or more project
managers they work under.
• The matrix structure creates a dual chain of command;
two lines of budget authority, and two sources of
performance and reward.
35
• WHAT ARE THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF
MATRIX STRUCTURE?
• Employees are generally accountable to
more than one boss.
• There are usually two separate chains of
command.
• There are two kinds of managers:
functional managers and project
managers.
• Managerial roles are fluid, not fixed.
• It brings together teams of people
depending on abilities and skills for
special projects
36
HOLOCRATIC
HOLACRACY WAS DEVELOPED BY BRIAN
ROBERTSON, A SOFTWARE ENGINEER, IN
2007. ROBERTSON WANTED TO FIND A MORE
EFFICIENT WAY OF WORKING AND
DEVELOPED HOLACRACY
• A holacracy is a system for
managing a company where there
are no assigned roles and
employees have the flexibility to
take on various tasks and move
between teams freely.
• The organizational structure of a
holacracy is rather flat, with there
being little hierarchy.
• It is also characterized by
organizations doing away with job
titles, managers and having
consensual decision-making.
37
HOLOCRATIC
ORGANIZATION
• Within holacracy everyone is seen a leader.
• It is expected that individuals become entrepreneurs in their specialist
circles and are given the power to change the organization from the
inside.
• People have clear roles and responsibilities, and organizations tend to
expand organically.
• What’s so good about it?
• Holacracy is good way of making work more efficient gives individuals
autonomy and produces solutions to problems quickly.
