ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MITOSIS

2

This is the sequence of growth and division of a cell. It is broken into 3 parts: Interphase, nuclear division(mitosis) and cytokinesis.

CELL CYCLE

media

3

media

This is a phase in the cell cycle when the cell prepares for division. It has three steps: G1, S and G2

INTERPHASE

4

THE 3 STEPS OF INTERPHASE

In the G1 phase, the cell grows and carries out it's normal function. In the S or synthesis phase, chromosomes are replicated. In the G2 phase, the cell continues to grow and prepares for cell division

5

Mitosis is the division of the nucleus while cytokinesis is the division of the cytoplasm. Cell division happens during mitosis. There are 4 steps of mitosis: prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase.

MITOSIS AND CYTOKINESIS

6

media

PROPHASE

  1. Chromosomes form (DNA condenses)

  2. Nuclear envelope breaks down

  3. Special micro tubules called spindle fibers form from the centrioles

7

media

METAPHASE

  1. Chromosomes line up down the middle (equator)

  2. Spindle fibers attach to the center of the chromosomes (centromeres)

8

media

Chromosomes are pulled to the opposite ends of the cell by the spindle fibers (Sister chromatids are separated)

ANAPHASE

9

media

TELOPHASE

  1. 2 new cells begin to form

  2. Nucleus reappears around both sets of DNA

10

CYTOKINESIS

In Plants: A cell plate is developed during telophase and forms the new cell wall so cell can divide
In Animals: Cell membrane forms a cleavage furrow to pinch off to form 2 identical cells
