Why do I need to know this?

Informational texts need to have a controlling idea. The author creates the idea with a purpose in mind. The controlling idea and purpose become the central point of the selection. Your job is to discover this idea. If the details are not verifying that, then you may have to rethink the controlling idea. The correct controlling idea and purpose and the details that support the controlling idea help your comprehension improve.
