Objectives

• Identify the qualities of a good friend.

• Understand how a friend can influence one’s behavior.

• Reflect on their own friendships in light of Islamic values

Choosing a friend

A man was with the Prophet (peace be upon him)
And a man passed by him and said: Messenger of Allah! I love this man. The Prophet
(peace be upon him) then asked: Have you informed him? He replied: No. He said: Inform
him. He then went to him and said: I love you for Allah's sake. He replied: May He for Whose sake you love me love you!

the religion of his beloved one, there let

Everyone looks to whom he befriends.
The Prophet (pbuh) said( Do not befriend except a faithful
al–mu’minn) And none would eat your food except the pious righteous (person).

How to choose a friend?

Always look for a good friend not a bad

The Reward Of Loving Others For The Sake
of Allah (SWT)

The Prophet said: A man set out to visit a brother
(in faith) in another town and Allah sent an angel onhis way. When the man met the angel, the latterasked him: Where do you intend to go? He said: I intend to visit my brother in this town. The angel
said: Have you done any favour to him? He said: No, I have no desire except to visit him because I love him for the sake of Allah, the Exalted, and Glorious. Thereupon the angel said: I am a
messenger to you from Allah (to inform you) that Allah loves you as you love him (for His sake

Enjoy the shade of Allah.

​Moving to the Day of Judgment, the Prophet said that Allah will ask on this day: Where are those who loved each other for the sake of My glory? Today, on a day when there is no shade but Mine, I shall shade them with My shade. [Muslim] You will only understand your intense need of this shade, when you are there and by just loving someone for the sake of Allah you can work for it now

Activity 3: Personal Criteria (3 minutes):

• List the specific qualities you want in a friend. This list should be based on the teachings of the Prophet (pbuh)

• Consider your values and personal goals when creating this list.

‘Uqbah [ibn Abi Mu‘ayt] was a friend of Umayyah ibn
Khalaf. When ‘Uqbah embraced Islam, Umayyah said to
him: ‘I do not want to ever see you if you follow
Muhammad’. ‘Uqbah disbelieved again and renounced Islam
to please his friend, and so Allah, revealed this verse”.
Other commentators of the Qur’an said: “Ubayy ibn Khalaf
and ‘Uqbah ibn Abi Mu‘ayt were allies. It was the habit of
‘Uqbah, upon returning from a travel, to invite the nobles of
his people to eat with him. ‘Uqbah also used to keep the
company of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. He
returned one day from one of his travels, made some food
and invited people and the Messenger of Allah,peace be
upon him to eat. When the food was placed before the
invitees, the Messenger of Allah,peace be upon him said to
him: ‘I will not eat your food until you bear witness that
there is no god except Allah and that I am the Messenger
of Allah’. ‘Uqbah said: ‘I bear witness that there is no god
except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of
Allah’,

upon which the Messenger of Allah,

The messenger of Allah peace be upon him, ate
from his food. Ubayy was absent on that occasion.
But when he was informed of what had happened,
he said to ‘Uqbah: ‘You have renounced the religion
of your forefathers?’ ‘Uqbah said: ‘By Allah, I did
not. I had a man in my house who refused to eat
my food unless I bore witness to him and I was
ashamed to let him leave my house without him
eating, and so I bore witness to him and he ate
my food’. Ubayy said to him: ‘I will never be happy
with you until you go to him, spit on his face and
step on his neck’. ‘Uqbah did just that.
Allah revealed

Facts of the Lesson:
1. Friendship and companionship have great virtue in Islam and a great reward
2. Friendship should be established for the sake of Allah, not for selfish reasons.
.3.An honest friendship pleases Allah.
4 . Muslims should avoid befriending those who are a bad influence on them.
