1215: The English nobles created the first document that set limits on the monarch's power. It created a LIMITED GOVERNMENT with a legislature called Parliament and guaranteed rights like TRIAL BY JURY.

Magna Carta

1689: Further LIMITED the British monarch's power by listing PROTECTED RIGHTS of citizens including free speech in Parliament, the right to bear arms, and protection from cruel punishment.
