• The specialized cells in multicellular organisms are organized based on their function (job)

• There are different levels of organization

How Specialized Cells Are Organized

Tissue - a group of cells of the same type

• Muscle tissue is made of muscle cells

• Nerve tissue is made of nerve cells

Organ - a group of tissues that work together to perform one function

• The heart is made of:

  • Cardiac muscle tissue

  • Connective (fat) tissue

• Its job is to pump blood throughout the body

Organ System - A group of organs that work together to perform a larger task

• The cardiovascular system includes:

  • Heart

  • Arteries, Veins, and Capillaries

  • Lungs

  • It exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide in all the cells in the body

• For animals, an organism is made of multiple organ systems

• For other multicellular kingdoms, there are similar levels of organization
