Here are 3 irregular verbs in the present tense. Jugar (to play) is a boot verb and the stem is changing from u to ue in all the forms except nosotros. Perder (lose) is also a boot verb, but its stem changes from e to ie in all forms except nosotros/vosotros.
Coger (to catch) is different. It changes from g to j, but only in the yo form of the present tense. Take note and memorize these differences.

The Past Tense (aka "The Preterit")
So to change tenses, you have to change the endings. Here are the endings for the preterit tense. It can translated several ways: yo tomé = I took / I did take / I have taken. The point is the action has already happened. Notice -ar verb endings are slightly different than the -er/-ir verbs. You will need to memorize these.
...and yes, the nosotros form in -ar & -ir verbs is EXACTLY what it is in the present tense....yep.
