Understanding the Periodic Table
The periodic table can help us
predict how atoms will combine
together to make compounds.
It can also help us predict the
properties of elements.
3
Unit 5 Learning Targets
Overall goal: Predict properties of elements based on their
location in the periodic table.
- Identify groups and periods on the periodic table
- Identify metals, nonmetals, and metalloids and their properties
- Determine the number of valence electrons for each element
- Draw dot diagrams for elements
- Identify trends on the periodic table: valence electrons,
Write the notes in BLUE on your note packet as you go through the slides.
4
Periodic Table Organization
Periods = rows (across)
- # of periods = 7
- Going across a period, the number of protons goes up
Groups = columns (up and down)
- # of groups = 18
- Elements in a group have similar properties
5
Lanthanide and Actinide Series
● Located under the periodic table, but they actually
belong in periods 6 and 7
● Lanthanides - period 6
● Actinides - period 7

Expanded periodic table
Why are lanthanides and actinides on the bottom?
So it's easier to fit the periodic table on piece of paper

7
Multiple Choice
What element is in period 2 and group 13?
lithium, Li
beryllium, Be
boron, B
helium, He
8
Multiple Choice
What element is in period 5 and group 11?
Copper, Cu
silver, Ag
Iron, Fe
Vanadium, V
9
Multiple Choice
What element is in group 17 and period 3?
10
Element properties
Malleable - can be hammered into sheets, bendable
11
Element properties
Ductile - can be formed into wire
12
Element properties
Conductor - allows heat and electricity to pass through
Semiconductor = can allow electricity to pass through under certain conditions
13
Element properties
Brittle - will break into pieces when hit with a hammer
14
1. Metals
2. Metalloids
3. Nonmetals
Elements are organized into 3 classifications.
15
Label your periodic table (use arrows for metals and nonmetals, lightly shade metalloids)
1. Left side of stairs:
metals
2. Right side of stairs:
nonmetals
3. Touching the stair:
metalloids (B, Si,
Ge, As, Sb, Te, Po?, At?)
Not Aluminum!

16
Multiple Choice
Most of the elements on the periodic table are
metalloids
metals
nonmetals
gases
17
Metal Properties:
- solid (except for Hg)
- shiny
- ductile
- malleable
- good conductors
Metals
18
Nonmetals
Nonmetal properties:
● Many gases, some solid, Br is liquid
● POOR conductors
● Brittle
● Dull (not shiny)
19
Metalloids
- Look like metals but behave like nonmetals
- Usually shiny
- Somewhat brittle
- Used as semiconductors
20
Multiple Choice
What is calcium, Ca?
Metal
Nonmetal
Metalloid
21
Multiple Choice
Is Bromine (Br) malleable?
Yes
No
22
2. Is Bromine malleable?
No, it is a nonmetal which are not malleable.
Also, it is a liquid!
23
Multiple Choice
Would it make sense to make a frying pan out of sulfur (S)?
Yes
No
24
3. Would it make sense to make a frying pan out of
sulfur? No, it is a nonmetal so it’s a poor conductor of heat.
25
Group 1: Alkali metals
Group2: Alkaline earth
metals
Groups 3-12:
Transition metals
Group 17: Halogens
Group 18: Noble gases
IMPORTANT GROUPS TO KNOW -
(also called Families)
26
Alkali Metals- Group 1
• Does not include Hydrogen
• Very reactive metals, always combined with other elements
(like in salt).
• Soft enough to cut with a butter knife
27
Alkaline Earth Metals- Group 2
• Reactive, but less reactive than alkali metals
• Called alkaline earth metals because the
form “alkaline” or basic solutions (pH>7)
Found in fireworks, batteries, alloys. Calcium in your
bones. Magnesium in chlorophyll.
28
Multiple Choice
Are alkaline earth metals malleable and ductile?
yes, because they are metals
no
29
Transition Metals
• Elements in groups 3-12
• Less reactive harder metals
• Includes metals used in
jewelry and construction.
• Metals used “as metal.”
30
Halogens - Group 17
• Very reactive, diatomic (ie. Cl2, F2,),
nonmetals
• Always found combined with other
element in nature
• Most reactive halogens are at the top.

31
Multiple Choice
Are halogens metals or nonmetals?
Metals
Nonmetals
32
The Noble Gases - Group 18
• VERY unreactive because
they have a full outer
energy level
• Used in lighted “neon” signs
