Message

Theme
Match by Flowicon from
Noun Project (CC BY 3.0)

The key idea expressed by

an author in a writing
piece.
Sometimes, the

message is explicit and
straightforward.

In other cases, the

message is embedded
in the text and requires
that readers infer it.

Universal ideas that speak to
a common human experience
(e.g., loneliness, friendship,
and bravery).

Readers infer the themes
that relate to the characters
and events in a story.

Readers determine how the
theme defines the plot, the
relationships among
characters, and how they
change throughout the story.
