A rectangle is a special type of these shapes:
* Quadrilateral: four sides
*Parallelogram: quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides
A square is a special type of rectangle. It has four right angles and four equal sides.

Area of a rectangle

You can find the area of a rectangle by multiplying the length times the width.

media

Let's try it! The length of this rectangle is 5 units. The width of this rectangle is 10 units.

media

Multiply the length by the width.
5×10=50

So, the area of the rectangle is 50 square units.

3

Perimeter of a rectangle

You can find the perimeter of any shape by adding the side lengths. Since rectangles have two pairs of equal sides, you can find the perimeter of a rectangle by multiplying the length and width by 2 and then adding those products.

media

Let's try it! The length of this rectangle is 5 units. The width of this rectangle is 10 units. Plug those numbers into the equation.

media

So, the perimeter of the rectangle is 30 units!
