How do we Cite Our Evidence?

After finding evidence in a text, you can then cite it. There are two ways to cite: explicitly and paraphrased. When you cite explicitly, you need to use quotation marks and write the evidence word for word. On the other hand, when we paraphrase, you don't have to use quotation marks, but you cannot write the information word for word.

The Purpose?

The reason why citing textual evidence is so important is that it supports our answer and claims using facts instead of baseless opinions. This can prove whether our claim is truthful and accurate.

7

According to the text, Patrick is very smart because he got all A's and he skipped the 8th grade.

Inferences

An inference is an educated guess based on textual evidence and background knowledge. Basically, by taking what we already know and using information found in the text we can make an inference. Inferences are never directly stated.

For Example:
If someone is crying, I can infer that they are sad.
If someone is running around carrying a leash, I can infer that they lost their dog.
