Local Winds:
Sea and Land Breezes
*caused by: CONVECTION
*Which means density differences --
warm rising/cold sinking
Click on the video to learn more and answer questions on the next 4 slides.
3
Global Wind Zones
Caused by: 1. unequal heating of Earth's surface 2. rotation of Earth (Coriolis Effect)
We live in the Westerlies.
4
When we talk about the weather what terms do you think of?
Take 2 min to make a list of at least 5 words. (list as many as you can)
Turn and talk with the person sitting next to you or in front of you. Compare your lists

Different areas of the world have different climates.. is one more desirable for humans than another?
Let's talk climate! (Answer these question in your notebook)
1) If you could live anywhere, where would you want to live and why?
2) Are there any areas of the world you would avoid? Why?
7
What factors influence weather and climate?
1. The Sun
2. The Water Cycle
3. The Atmosphere
4. The Ocean
5. The Earth Itself
8
So why study climate systems anyway?
It determines the weather
Weather affects humans daily
It impacts long-term decisions
It affects long-term trends in plants and animals
9
If you walk outside...
and it is sunny but the clouds make you think it might rain, you're predicting the weather.
Weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular time and place.
Distant winds and ocean currents can affect local weather, even in places that are far from the ocean
Do you think we are affected by the ocean here in NM? How? What is the closest ocean to us?
10
Air Masses are large bodies of air that have the same temperature and moisture throughout.
Winds cause air massess to move.
11
Where two air masses meet, that's called a front.
Fronts bring changes in weather.
12
Cold Front
Warm Front

How do Hurricanes form?
The very warm surface water vapor rises.
The water vapor condenses to form storm clouds and raindrops.
Water warming, evaporating, condensing, and releasing heat builds clouds and a core of low pressure.
