For the most convenient travel in Bangkok, look up or down! Above, you will see the BTS (or Skytrain), which carries passengers along an elevated track. Below, you can take the MRT, whose trains move through underground tunnels. So far, Bangkok is the only city in Thailand to have these kinds of rail systems. But public transport networks are now being planned for Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Khon Kean.

Phuket will be the first to get its new transport system. A tram network, costing 20 billion bath, has already been designed. The track will cover 60 kilometres and have 23 stations. It will provide a direct, 45-minute link between the airport and the town centre.

2. Chiang Mai

A tram system with three routes is also proposed for the northern city of Chiang Mai. Local Tuk-Tuk and Songthaew drivers are unhappy about the project, which they say will take away their business. No details are confirmed yet.

In Hat Yai, a monorail system has been suggested. It would look similar to the BTS in the capital, but the track would be shorter at just 12 kilometres. Fares would be fixed at 20 baht, making it an affordable choice for passengers

3. Hat Yai

Locals have complained about increasing congestion in their city. The solution might be a light rail system, running alongside the busy Mittraphap Road. It is hoped that construction will begin within two years.

4. Khon Kaen

These new systems could make Thailand a transport leader in ASEAN. Tiny Singapores, of course, has excellent transport. Malaysia and the Philippines have metro networks in their capitals. Indonesia is constructing one in Jakarta; Vietnam is considering one in Ho Chi Minh City. However, providing metro systems across the county could be a unique source of pride to Thailand.
