1

Labelling

WATER CYCLE: Read each process and label the diagram with the correct description.

Drag labels to their correct position on the image

Water seeps through spaces in soil

Liquid water is heated, becomes steam

Water vapor cools and liquifies

Water droplets merge & fall from clouds

Water flows downhill to a stream/lake

Evaporation from leaves

2

Open Ended

Based on your knowledge about desalination, how would you build a DIY device to get drinkable water at a desert island?

3

Labelling

WATER CYCLE: Read each process and label the diagram with the correct term.

Drag labels to their correct position on the image

Precipitation

Condensation

Transpiration

Infiltration

Evaporation

Runoff

4

Multiple Select

What are the 3 characteristics of places that suffer the most with water stress?

(more than 1 is correct)

1

Small population

2

Overpopulation

3

Extensive farming (irrigation for crops, and animals)

4

Arid/dry

5

Rainy

5

Hotspot

Which area(s) on this map suffer from high / extremely high water stress mainly due to overpopulation?

6

Match

Match the following standards for water quality / impaired waters

Coliform Bacteria

Heavy Metals

Nutrient Pollution

Oxygen-Depleting Pollution (lack of O2)

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)

Bacteria from human sewage & manure

Neurotoxins from mining & fertilizers

N & P -> promote algae overgrowth

Organic matter consumed by decomposers

Chemicals that do not break down

7

media

Observe the steps of eutrophication below (from 1 to 9). Notice that once organisms start to die and decompose (starting at #6), this part of the process becomes a cycle (it keeps repeating over and over) until all life is gone. Also notice that once the plants die, they will not perform photosynthesis, which means there will be no oxygen production.

Eutrophication

8

Labelling

Now you try to order the steps in eutrophication.

Drag labels to their correct position on the image

Animals die

Algae blocks sunlight

Algae overgrowth

Plants can't do photosynthesis

Fertilizer in runoff

Decomposition

Plants die

O2 depletion

Algae dies

Fertilizer leaching from the ground

9

media
media
media

Steadily delivers water directly to the roots -- avoids water waste.

Drip Irrigation

Slows runoff & erosion, and increase infiltration (helps from groundwater reserves)

Contour plowing

Prevent leaks and block evaporation -- avoids water waste.

Lining irrigation canals

10

Open Ended

Why is there more focus on water conservation for agricultural practices than any other type of human activity?

11

Reorder

Reorder the following steps in wastewater treatment

Physical / Mechanical treatment (screening)

Physical treatment: Primary clarification (sedimentation)

Biological treatment (bacteria degrades organic compounds)

Physical treatment: Secondary clarification (sedimentation)

Treated water goes back to the river
