The Renaissance Era

The era known as the Renaissance (1450 – 1600) followed the Middle Ages, and with it came tremendous advances in culture and learning.  The technology of sailing ships allowed Europeans to set up colonies all over the world, or at least as far away as their sailing ships could take them.  Port cities became bustling places, full of wealthy traders.  Music flourished in this era.

The Renaissance Era

The growing wealthy class employed musicians for their entertainment.  The same sailing ships that carried traders and goods from port to port also carried the sounds of music.  Musicians were able to hear the music of other cities and other lands like they never had before.  They used what they heard from other places in their own music, which created a sort of international style for the first time in history.

Madrigal Feastes were popular, featuring court members and selected servants singing secular songs. Composers were hired to create music for the Feastes. Madrigals were elaborate compositions with word painting and complex vocal lines. The term 'madrigal' was used in England and Italy, 'chanson' in France, and 'lied' in Germany.
