Il sistema nervoso permette al corpo

Nei vertebrati la cefalizzazione è associata alla simmetria
bilaterale del corpo; i vertebrati hanno inoltre molti più neuroni
degli invertebrati.
Il sistema nervoso centrale (SNC) dei vertebrati, costituito dal
midollo spinale e dall’encefalo, nell’embrione si sviluppa da un
tubo neurale.

Romboencefalo - Dal punto di vista evolutivo, il romboencefalo è la regione più antica; quasi tutti i vertebrati hanno un romboencefalo ben sviluppato che regola l’attività motoria in modo inconscio.

Negli esseri umani comprende
il midollo allungato (o bulbo),
che regola le attività involontarie (respirazione e battito cardiaco),
il ponte contiene numerose fibre
che connettono il midollo spinale
ai centri superiori, e il cervelletto
che coordina le attività motorie,
la postura e l’equilibrio.

Mesencefalo - Elabora e integra le sensazioni uditive e ottiche.
Proencefalo - Legato alla percezione delle sensazioni olfattive, negli umani si è evoluto in telencefalo (cervello) e diencefalo a sua volta suddiviso in talamo e ipotalamo.

Il talamo riceve gli stimoli sensoriali da mesencefalo e romboencefalo e li trasmette al cervello, mentre l’ipotalamo regola la temperatura corporea, la pressione sanguigna, coordina l’omeostasi, mettendosi in relazione anche con l’ipofisi. Esso controlla anche le attività legate agli istinti.
