Verbals and Verbal Phrases

A verbal is a verb form used as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb (particle, gerund, and infinitive).

A verbal phrase consists of a verbal and its modifiers and complements. The three kinds of verbal phrases are the participial phrase, the gerund phrase, and the infinitive phrase.

The Participle

A participle is a verb form that can be used as an adjective.

Two kinds of participles are the present participle and the past participle.

Present participles end in -ing.

Example: The freezing rain made the road slippery.

The Participle

Most past participles end in -d or -ed. Others are irregularly formed.

Example: We returned rested and relaxed after a long vacation.

The lab tested samples of water taken from wells in the area.

A participial phrase consists of a participle and its modifiers and complements. The entire phrase is used as an adjective.

Example: Living far from the city, I developed a love for nature.
