The Rock Cycle
Explore the journey of rocks through the fascinating process of the rock cycle. Discover how rocks transform over time and the forces that shape them. Dive into the geological wonders of our planet.
2
The Rock Cycle
Rock Cycle - Geosphere/Weathering and Erosion
3
The Rock Cycle
Rocks undergo a continuous cycle of transformation. Igneous rocks form from cooling magma. Sedimentary rocks are created when weathered rocks compact and cement. Metamorphic rocks are formed under extreme heat and pressure. This process allows rocks to change from one type to another.
4
The Rock Cycle
Igneous - formed by cooling and hardening of magma
Sedimentary - formed by weathered rocks (sediment) compacting and cementing
Metamorphic - formed by exposure to extreme heat and pressure
5
Multiple Choice
Which type of rock is formed when weathered rocks compact and cement?
Igneous rocks
Sedimentary rocks
Metamorphic rocks
Magma rocks
6
The Rock Cycle
■ Rocks can change from one type to any other from the processes listed above
Weathering - rocks broken down into smaller pieces (sediment)
Erosion - Removal or transport of weathered materials
7
Agents of Erosion
Gravity
Glaciers / Ice 2G and the 3W
Wind
Water
Waves
8
Gravity
Gravity Causes:
landslides, mudslides
• Creeps - Slow movement of land masses downward over lang periods of time
And Slump - Sudden downward movement of a land mass
9
Glaciers / Ice
Glaciers / Ice :
Plucking glaciers moving picks up rocks from land below
Abrasion-rocks picked up scrape (weather) the land below
10
Wind
Wind:
Abrasion-wind striking rocks
Deflation-wind picks up loose material and weathers rock
11
Water
Water:
Rivers - running water erodes the surface
Precipitation, and
Groundwater-
fills spaces underground in the soil and erodes the surface
12
Waves
Waves:
crash into coastlines and shape the coastline by weathering rocks
Erodes-the weathered materials and deposits of sediment elsewhere
