Past Simple vs Past Continuous

Past Continuous Tense :
โครงสร้างประโยค Subject  + was, were + Verb 1 + ing

ใช้บรรยายเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้นในอดีต

Past Simple Tense :
โครงสร้างประโยค Subject + Verb 2

ใช้บรรยายเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดแทรกขึ้นมา

หลักการใช้ Tense คู่ ใน Past Tense

1. เหตุการณ์แรกที่เกิดขึ้นและดำเนินอยู่ (เกิดก่อน):
 จะใช้ Past Continuous Tense

2.เหตุการณ์สั้นๆนั้นได้เข้ามาแทรก(เกิดหลัง) : 
จะใช้ Past Simple Tense
3.While,As = ขณะที่ > ใช้กับประโยค Past continuous

4.When = เมื่อ > ใช้กับประโยค Past simple

1. He was sleeping when the telephone rang.
2. They were eating dinner at 8pm last night.
3. While I was walking home, it rained.
4. We were watching TV when we heard a loud noise.
5. While we were studying, she entered the room.

หลักการสังเกต
วิธีการใช้สอง tense นี้ถ้าสังเกตดีๆจะพบว่า กริยาที่ใช้กับ past continuous tense ได้นั้นจะต้องเป็นกริยาที่เกิดเป็นระยะเวลานานๆ ได้ เช่น sleep, take a show, have dinner, walk, run, eat, teach, cry, etc. แต่กริยาที่ใช้กับ pat simple นั้นจะเป็นกริยาที่เกิดได้เพียงแค่ระยะเวลาสั้นๆ เช่น arrive, cut, hear, call, ring, hit, see, etc.
