Special Cases

When the positive ends in d, t, s, ß, sch

In order to allow for pronunciation, add an (e) before the -sten in the superlative form

Examples: heiß am heißesten
interessant am interessantesten

15

Other Irregular Forms

These are fully irregular and must be memorized!

gut besser am besten
viel mehr am meisten
hoch höher am höchsten
gern lieber am liebsten
nah näher am nächsten

Achtung! Caution!

Some one syllable adjectives/adverbs do NOT take an Umlaut in the comparative and superlative forms! (voll, laut, bunt...)

Adjectives ending in -el drop the e in the comparative form:
dunkel dunkler am dunkelsten

According to the rules, groß should take an e before the superlative ending, BUT IT DOESN'T.
groß größer am größten (but heiß heißer am heißesten)
