When do we use it?

Passive Voice:

It is used too emphasize the subject of the sentence. The passive voice shifts the focus from the doer of the action to the receiver. It is often used in formal writing or to create a sense of mystery.


Example: Active voice: Spielberg directed the movie E.T
Passive voice: The movie E.T was directed by Spielberg.

Passive Voice Formation

  • The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.

    Active: My father built this house.

    Passive: This house was built by my father.

  • The subject of the active sentence becomes the agent of the passive sentence and it is preceded by the preposition "by".

    Example: This house was built by my father.
