British standards
BS EN 806

BS EN 806
This British Standard specifies requirements for, and gives guidance on, the design, installation, alteration, testing and maintenance of services supplying hot water for domestic use within buildings.

3

The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations

Regulation 5 of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations requires that the water undertaker must be notified before any work is commenced on most types of plumbing installations. Anyone who installs or uses the installation without their written consent could be committing a criminal offence.

Question image

How many types of hot water system can you name?

8

There are 2 main types of hot water systems:

Centralised
Localised

9

Types of centralised hot water supply systems

Centralised systems are those where the source of hot water supply is sited centrally in the property for distribution to all of the hot water outlets.
These can be divided into:

  • centralised open-vented hot water systems

  • centralised unvented hot water systems

  • centralised instantaneous hot water systems.

10

Centralised open-vented hot water systems

They may be further sub-divided into:

  • the direct system

  • the indirect system

  • the double-feed indirect system

  • the single-feed, self-venting indirect system

13

An indirect system uses an indirect-type hot water storage cylinder, which contains some form of heat exchanger to heat the secondary water.

There are two distinct types:

  • the double-feed indirect hot water storage cylinder

  • the single-feed, self-venting indirect hot water storage cylinder

Open vented indirect (single feed, self-venting type) hot water storage system

This system uses a single feed, self-venting indirect cylinder, often referred to by its trade name – the ‘primatic’ cylinder. It contains a special heat exchanger, which uses air entrapment to separate the primary water from the secondary water.
