The Call for Change
Rome in the 70s BC was dangerous. Generals and politicians went to war to gain more power. People who were unemployed rioted because they couldn't get enough food. Some Romans tried to stop the chaos in the government. For example, Cicero, a gifted philosopher and as an orator, or public speaker asked Romans to limit the generals’ power and return power to the Senate. Cicero was unsuccessful because many Romans did not agree with him and Rome's government stayed the same.

Caesar's Rise to Power
As Cicero was calling on Romans to take power away from the generals. Then another powerful general was working to take over the government. Julius Caesar, the greatest general in Roman history. He was admired for his bravery, skilled in battle, and his soldiers respected him because he treated them well. Caesar made an agreement with Pompey, a powerful Roman, and two other friends to work together to fight against the Senate. Eventually, Caesar became the most powerful dictator for life. His friends were jealous and resented his rise to power. In 50 BC, Caesar friend Pompey wanted him to give up his power but he refused. Pompey and his army tried to attack Caesar and his army troops. Caesar chased Pompey and his army around the Mediterranean for one year. He drove Pompey into Egypt and Killed him.

Conflict in the Senate
After Caesar killed Pompey in Egypt he stayed there and met Cleopatra VII whom he made Queen of Egypt. Soon Caesar returned to Rome and forced the Senate to name him dictator for life. People still resented the way that Caesar gained power and tried to make himself king. The Romans did not want a king and Senators became angry with Caesar. On March 15 in 44 BC, in the Senate house meeting a group of senators attacked Caesar and stabbed him 23 times to his death. Among the attackers was Brutus, a young senator, former friend and ally of Caesar’s, was one of the attackers. During Caesar 's attack he recognized his friend and was shocked by Brutus betrayal. He stopped fighting against his attackers covered his face with his robe and submitted himself falling to the floor.
