Parts of France, Spain, Italy, Croatia, and Greece have all experienced extreme heat waves, with temperatures soaring well above 40°C in July. On the Italian islands of Sardinia and Sicily, temperatures reached near the European record high of 48.8°C. In Greece, major tourist attractions had to be shut down when temperatures peaked during the middle of the day to prevent tourists from getting heatstroke or other heat-related conditions. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world in South Korea, extreme weather has similarly taken a heavy toll. The country faced unprecedented downpours in short periods of time that have caused nationwide devastation. In Seoul, storms flooded homes, roads, and subways, leading to the loss of at least nine lives. The countryside was not spared, either, with 26 people losing their lives because of severe flooding that damaged homes and farmland. People had to be evacuated from certain regions due to the risk of landslides. Regrettably, scientists predict that events like these will only worsen in the years to come.
