Motion
An object is in
MOTION if its
distance from a
REFERENCE point is
CHANGING
Un objeto está en MOVIMIENTO
si su distancia desde un punto de
REFERENCIA está CAMBIANDO
2
RELATIVE
This is why we say that motion is
relative. It depends on your
REFERENCE POINT
Your point of view
Your frame of reference
Por eso decimos que el movimiento es
relativo. Depende de tu PUNTO DE
REFERENCIA Tu punto de vista
Tu marco de referencia
3
Reference Points
What makes a good Reference Point?
1. Objects Fixed on Earth
2. Objects that are moving IF we are in them
3. We always assume the reference point is STATIONARY!
Siempre asumimos que el punto de
referencia está ESTACIONARIO, NO EN
MOVIMIENTO.
4
Multiple Choice
Greg is on a scooter and eating an ice-cream cone. (He is very talented.) The ice-cream is not moving in reference to the
Scooter
Earth
Sun
Trees
5
Multiple Choice
Greg is still holding his ice-cream as he is riding past Miranda at 4mph. Miranda sees the ice-cream and thinks that it looks yummy. BUT it is moving at 4 mph in reference to what?
to her
to Greg
to the skateboard
6
Multiple Choice
A person on a plane would use what as a reference point?
The plane
The Sun
The Earth
The bus
7
Multiple Choice
A person standing at the airport and watching a plane fly would use what as a reference point?
The plane
The Sun
The Earth
The bus
8
Is it moving?
Is a girl riding 2 mph on a
skateboard moving in reference
to the trees around her?
YES!
in reference to the skateboard?
NO!
9
Speed
The distance an object moves
per unit of time.
Speed it a type of RATE.
A rate tells you a change that
occurs in time.
¡La distancia es importante para determinar si
algo está en movimiento! ¡Medimos la distancia
en metros, m! Unidad SI!
10
Finding Speed, Distance, and Time
11
Speed
A ball rolls 10 meters in 20 seconds.
What was its speed?
S = D / T
S = 10 m / 20 s
S = 0.5 m/s
12
Example
A ball is rolling at a speed of
10 m/s for 34 seconds. How
far does it travel.
What are you solving for?
Speed, Distance or Time?
Solve it!
Distance!
d = s x t
= 10 m/s x 34 s
= 340 m
13
Example
A ball is rolling at a speed of
2 m/s for 100m. How long
does it take?
What are you solving for?
Speed, Distance or Time?
Solve it!
Time!
t = d/s
= 100 m / 2 m/s
= 50 s
14
Multiple Choice
What is the speed of an object that travels 400 m in 50 seconds?
2000 m/s
450 m/s
350 m/s
8 m/s
15
The SLOPE of the graph
indicates the speed!
● The steeper the graph, the faster the
speed. Object A is STEEPER than the
rest of the lines (it would be more fun
to roll down!) so the object is going
FASTER!
● The flatter the graph, the slower the
speed. Object C has the FLATTEST
line so object is going the SLOWEST.

16
Multiple Choice
A ball rolls 100 meters at a rate of 2 m/s. How long did this take?
200 seconds
50 seconds
20 seconds
50 meters
17
A STRAIGHT LINE means the
motion is CONSTANT and
UNCHANGING.
No speeding up or slowing
down.
NO ACCELERATION!
18
Speeding up
Slowing down
When you see a curve
on the graph it
indicates that the
object is either
SPEEDING up or
SLOWING down.
19
Velocity is different from speed. It
has TWO parts:
The first part is SPEED.
The second part is DIRECTION.
velocity is speed in a direction.
Graph B shows velocity moving constantly
AWAY from the reference point -
the POSITIVE direction.
Graph C shows velocity moving constantly
TOWARD the reference point -
the NEGATIVE direction.

20
Multiple Choice
Which graph shows constant motion?
21
Multiple Choice
Who has a faster speed?
A
B
Same speed
You cannot tell but B went further.
22
Multiple Choice
What matches this graph?
Slowly away, fast back
Quickly away, slowly back
Quickly back, slowly away
slowly back, quickly away
23

What shows STOPPED motion?
25
Multiple Choice
What shows Slowing Down?
