What is a Pronoun?

A pronoun is used in place of a noun or another pronoun (aka the antecedent.)

A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea.

An antecedent is a word for which the pronoun stands.

Pronoun and Antecedent Rules

Singular vs. Plural: If the antecedent is plural, the pronoun must be plural. If
the antecedent is singular, the pronoun must be singular.

Masculine vs. Feminine: If the antecedent is masculine, the pronoun must be
masculine. If the antecedent is feminine, the pronoun must be feminine.

The boy scratched his armpit. The girl scratched her armpit.

The boys scratched their armpits The girls scratched their armpits.

Subject Pronouns

Subject pronouns do the action of a sentence. They are the main subject.

Examples: I, you, he, she, it, we, you

Object Pronouns

Object pronouns receive the action of a verb or a preposition.
Examples: me, you, him, her, it, us, them

Bob took her to work on Monday.

Possessive Pronouns

Possessive pronouns show possession.

Examples: my, mine, his, hers, its, your, yours, our, ours, their, theirs

The dog is mine.

The children make theirbeds.

Intensive Pronouns

Intensive pronouns end in self or selves and places emphasis on its antecedent by
referring back to another noun or pronoun used earlier in the sentence.

Jacob made tea for the king himself.
The team knew that they themselves were responsible for playing their best.

I can understand what the sentence means without the pronoun. That’s how I know
this is an intensive pronoun. The pronoun is just there to add emphasis.
