2
A variation describes naturally occurring differences in organisms of the same species.
Variation:
3
An adaptation is a Characteristics an organism has that allows it to survive in a given environment. These can be inherited or learned (behavioral).
Adaptation:
Example: Plant growing toward the sun
This is an inherited (instinctual) behavior
4
Multiple Choice
Which answer choice is an example of a physical adaptation?
A scarlet king snake copying the color and pattern of a venomous Coral snake
A squirrel foraging for acorns.
A human sweating after running a mile.
Bird migrating for the winter.
5
Types of adaptations
Physical (external):
Physical features that help an organism survive in its environment
Such as the shape, color and pattern of the organism.
Behavioral:
Inherited behavioral adaptations are instinctual such as migration, sneezing, and hibernation.
Learned behavioral adaptations are behaviors an organism must learn and get good at, such as building shelter and hunting.
Physiological (internal):
Changes that happen inside the organisms body. Such as a dog panting to cool its body temperature or an octopus squirting ink to defend itself.
6
Bright coloring on flowers attract pollinators
Bright colorings
This helps prey animals hide from predators, and predators hide from prey.
Camouflage
Species copy the color or pattern of another species that is venomous/poisonous and predators leave them alone.
Mimicry
The giraffes long neck is a perfect adaptation to the animals natural habitat and makes getting those tasty hard to reach leaves more accessible.
Long neck
Examples of Physical Adaptations
7
Multiple Choice
Which answer choice is an example of an inherited behavioral adaptation.
A flock of geese migrating south for the winter.
The sharp canines of a wolf.
A lion hunting prey.
An artic hare's fur changing color in the winter.
8
Multiple Choice
A cheetah learning to hunt through trial and error is an example of which type of adaptation?
Inherited behavioral
adaptation
Physiological Adaptation
Learned Behavioral
adaptation
Physical
9
Inherited adaptations are natural reactions that plants and animals do without having to think or learn them.
Example: A plant growing towards the sunlight.
Inherited (instinctual ) Adaptations
Learned adaptations are behaviors that plant and animals have to learn and get good at in order to survive.
Example: Meerkats looking out for predators.
Learned Adaptations
Behavioral Adaptations
10
Multiple Choice
What is migration ?
A deep sleep that helps an organism to save energy and survive the winter without eating much
When an animal population moves a long distance to another area in order to survive
The process by which a plant grows from a seed into a seedling
The process by which a cell replicates its chromosomes and then segregates them
11
Multiple Choice
The white-tailed produces a venom that it injects into prey that causes paralysis.
This is an example of which type of adaptation?

12
Multiple Choice
How do Icefish not freeze in freezing temperatures?
They produce antifreeze proteins that circulate in their blood that keeps their blood from freezing.
What type of adaptation is this?
Behavior

Physiological
13
Physiological adaptations are changes that happen within the plant or animal.
Examples:
Venom that is produced by a snake to ward off predators or capture prey.
Physiological Adaptations
14
Portions of hollow bones are connected to air sacs that help the bird with respiration and increasing the amount of oxygen in the birds blood. This allows the bird to get more energy for flight.
Birds- Hollow Bones
Gills are an organ that allow underwater organisms to breath. Water runs over the gills and blood in the capillaries picks up oxygen in the water.
Fish- Gills
Xylem is a vascular tissue inside a plant that transports water and nutrients from soil to the plants stem and leaves.
Plant- Xylem

16
Multiple Choice
Variations are important to an organisms survival because....
It allows some individuals to adapt to the environment and helps to ensure the population's survival.
They help an organism decrease the need to adapt.
Variations give predators more options to choose from.
