PERUVIAN INDEPENDENCE

Peru's journey to independence was a complex process that had been unfolding for several years before achieving autonomy. By the time Simon Bolivar launched his campaign in 1821, various South American nations had already been engaged in wars of independence. The people of Peru had been striving for freedom, having experienced the decline of earlier civilizations and the Spanish conquest. By the 15th century, the Incas had emerged as a powerful state, but their rule was eventually overshadowed by the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors led by Francisco Pizarro in 1532. The indigenous population had been facing exploitation and the devastating impact of epidemic diseases introduced by the Spanish, marking a critical turning point in Peru's history. Throughout the 1820s, Bolivar's military campaigns and the Battle of Ayacucho in 1824 ultimately secured Peru's liberation, shaping the nation's destiny after a prolonged struggle.
