The United Nations

  • The United Nations (UN) is an international organisation established on October 24, 1945, shortly after the end of World War 2.

  • The United Nations was formed to replace the League of Nations which had failed to prevent World War 2.

World leaders who had collaborated to end World War 2 felt a strong need for a mechanism that would help them bring peace and stop future wars.

They realised that this was possible only if all nations worked together through a global organisation. The United Nations was to be that organisation.

Organs of the UN


The United Nations has set up six principal organs. They are

  1. The General Assembly

  2. The Security Council

  3. The Economic and Social Council

  4. The Secretariat

  5. The United Nations Trustee Council

  6. The International Court of Justice.

The General Assembly is the main organ of the United Nations and includes all its members.
It provides a forum for member states and is the main representative and policy making section of the UN. It makes decisions on important peace and security issues.

The Assembly meets every year from September

to December.

The Security Council has 15 members. It has primary responsibility under the UN charter for maintaining peace and security.

It can be convened at any time when peace is threatened. It usually first asks the parties to reach agreement by peaceful means. If fighting breaks out, the Council tries to secure a ceasefire. It may then send peacekeeping missions to troubled areas to restore peace

  • Saudi Arabia is a large country located in the Arab Peninsula.The Arab peninsula is the largest Peninsula in the world.

  • Peninsula is a piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides.

  • The capital of Saudi Arabia is Riyadh.

The Land of the Hot Sand :

Most of Saudi Arabia is a high rocky plateau covered by vast desert. The desert is covered with small Hills of sand called sand dunes. There is no lakes or rivers in this land. in some places in the desert underground water comes to the surface forming areas called Oasis.

Very few plants can grow in a desert climate.

Cacti and some short shrubs, which can withstand the hot dry conditions, can be seen in the desert regions of Saudi Arabia.

Date palms and some crops such as wheat and barley are grown in oases.

Saudi Arabia's Petroleum


Saudi Arabia is a very rich country. This is because of the vast deposits of petroleum in the country.

The money earned by selling petroleum to other countries has been used to build modern cities such as Riyadh and Jeddah.
