The Water Cycle
I will explain how the sun
and the ocean interact in
the water cycle
I know I have it when I can
explain the sun’s and
ocean’s role in the water
cycle
3
Let’s see what you already know
Pre-Assessment
4
01 What are the different components of the water cycle?
Essential Questions
02 How does the Sun move water in the water cycle from the
ocean?
03 How does the sun affect weather patterns that move water
and form precipitation?
5
THE WATER
Cycle
01
6
What is the
water cycle?
The water cycle is the continous movement of
water within the Earth’s and the atomosphere.
Water moves through the atmosphere,
oceans, land, and even living things.
7
Water
•
Have you ever thought about the water
you drink?
•
Where does it come from?
8
Water
•
All of the water on Earth has been
here for billions of years.
•
The water that you drink today may
have been at the bottom of the ocean
or frozen in a glacier a million
years ago.

States of Matter
Water can be found in 3 different states of matter on Earth.
Solid like snow or ice
Liquid like oceans or
lakes
Gas found in the
atmosphere
10
water
Most of the Earth’s water is stored in the
oceans. This is salt water.
The small amount of water on Earth that
contains little or no salt is called fresh water.
Most fresh water is frozen in ice caps and
glaciers.
A very small amount of fresh water is liquid.
This water is found in rivers, lakes, ponds, and
streams.
11
Open Ended
Where do you think our drinking water comes from?
12
The water Cycle
•The water cycle is the movement of water
through the atmosphere, oceans, land, and
even living things.
•The movement of water never stops.
•Earth’s water is continuously be recycled.
13
The Water Cycle
•The interaction between the Sun and the Oceans drives the water cycle.
•The Sun is continuously heating the surface of the ocean, keeping the water cycle in motion.
•When the Sun heats the ocean surface it
causes the water to evaporate (changing the water from a liquid to a gas)
14
The water Cycle
•The water cycle is driven by energy from the Sun.
•The Sun is considered a medium star.
• How would the water cycle change if the Sun was bigger or smaller?
Or What if we didn’t have a Sun at all?
15
Open Ended
How would the water cycle change if the Sun was bigger or smaller?
Or What if we didn’t have a Sun at all?
16
The water Cycle
•Evaporation occurs when liquid water is
heated by the Sun and changes to a gas,
which is called water vapor.
•Evaporation is caused by the Sun’s heat.
•It takes place mostly over the oceans.
•Water vapor rises into the atmosphere.
Besides the oceans, where else
does evaporation occur?
Evaporation

Besides the oceans, where else
does evaporation occur?
18
Transpiration
Plants absorb liquid water
through their roots and release it
as water vapor through the leaves.
Like evaporation, transpiration is
caused by heat from the Sun.
The water Cycle
19
Multiple Select
What two water cycle processes
are driven (caused) by the heat of
the Sun?
Evaporation
Condensation
Precipitation
Run-off
Transporation
20
Condensation
Condensation occurs when water vapor loses
energy and changes to liquid water.
Air cools as it rises higher in the atmosphere.
Cool air holds less water vapor than warm air.
Cooling water vapor (gas) condenses into
water droplets(liquid) that form clouds
The water Cycle
21
Precipitation
Precipitation is when water fall from the
clouds to the surface of the Earth in the form of rain, sleet, snow, or hail.
Precipitation occurs when clouds become too heavy (full).
Precipitation’s state of matter depends on the temperature as it falls to the surface of the Earth.
The water Cycle
22
Run off
Run off is when water that flows
on top of the Earth’s surface.
Eventually ending up in lakes,
rivers, and oceans.
The water Cycle
23
Groudwater
Groundwater is water that soaks
into the ground.
It moves very slowly.
Can be stored in underground
lakes or end up back into the
ocean.
The water Cycle
24
Open Ended
Where does groundwater and
runoff eventually end up?

Water Cycle
Last Look at It
Evaporation and transpiration are
both driven by heat from the Sun.
Water can be found in three states
of matter on Earth.
Most of Earth’s fresh water is found
in lakes, rivers, and streams.
Condensation must occur in order
for clouds to form.
Most of the water on Earth is fresh
water.
Evaporation occurs when water
loses energy and cools down.
The interaction between the Sun
and oceans drives the water cycle.
All precipitation that falls to
Earth is stored underground.

The water cycle!
Imagine you are a drop of water. Think about
the many places this little drop of water could
travel in its billions of years on Earth.
Come up with a story, song, or poem that
follows the drop of water as it moves from one
place to another.
