From the late 15th century French and British settlers explored, colonized, and fought over various places within present day Canada. Both French and English traditions are woven into Canada’s cheese making heritage. Cheese making soon became established with French settlers making ripened cheese based on tradition methods and recipes from their homeland. The French explorers claimed territory along St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes. Which became known as New France. British settlers primarily stayed along the Atlantic coast and the Hudson Bay Area.

Influences on the culture

​Canadian Aboriginal had formed two groups First Nations and Inuit. First Nations lived all throughout Canada as farmers and fishers, or nomadic hunters. Inuit lived in the far northern region where it wasn’t suitable for cultivation.

Food Culture

The French influence much of Canadian cuisine and is rich and heavily spiced. It’s often heavy in breads and potatoes, as well as game meat like hare and venison but also do to the cold climate it also features a wide array of soups and stews.

Traditional Foods

Some traditional foods in Canada are Bannock, moose, deer, bison, pemmican maple taffy, and Métis stew or barley stew.

Canada’s most iconic food is Poutine crispy fries, squeaky cheese curds and rich gravy all combined to create the meal of dreams, and this French Canadian dish is so popular that it can be found all over the world
