Logarithms let you solve for exponents

Any time you don't know an exponent, you will put a "log" in your problem

2

3

  • All calculators are programmed with bases of 10 to save space. We have a base of 3

  • Change of base formula log (12)/ log (3)

  • Uses NORMAL LOG aka log base 10 with both

  • If there is no base written on a logarithm then it is a base 10 (because of scientific notation)

4

Multiple Choice

How would we figure out x for

5x = 395^x\ =\ 39  ?

1

log395 = x\log_{39}5\ =\ x

2

log539=x\log_539=x

3

logx39 = 5\log_x39\ =\ 5

4

log5x = 39\log_5x\ =\ 39

5

Multiple Choice

How do you put

log539\log_539  in a calculator?

1

log 5log 39\frac{\log\ 5}{\log\ 39}

2

log (395)\log\ \left(\frac{39}{5}\right)

3

log (539)\log\ \left(\frac{5}{39}\right)

4

log 39log 5\frac{\log\ 39}{\log\ 5}

6

Multiple Choice

How do you solve

72 = 6x72\ =\ 6^x

1

log6x = 72\log_6x\ =\ 72

2

log726 = x\log_{72}6\ =\ x

3

log672 = x\log_672\ =\ x

4

logx72 = 6\log_x72\ =\ 6

7

Multiple Choice

How do you put

log672\log_672  in a calculator?

1

log 72log 6\frac{\log\ 72}{\log\ 6}

2

log (726)\log\ \left(\frac{72}{6}\right)

3

log (672)\log\ \left(\frac{6}{72}\right)

4

log 6log 72\frac{\log\ 6}{\log\ 72}
